Description |
In late Spring, 2011, a former classmate, who’s an oboist/English hornist and a staunch advocate of my music, wanted to commission me to compose a double reed trio for 2 oboes and English horn to be premiered at a double reed festival/workshop in Portland, OR. The commissioner had asked for a short and exciting single movement work based on either jazz, blues, ragtime or other American musical genre that would prompt audience members/festival participants to move with the music while listening to it. The result was Soulful Trio, No. 1 (2011) 2 oboes and English horn, derived from a gospel blues-like progression. This single movement work displays an ostinato variations form with a repeated chord progression derived from the song "Kumbaya", incorporating jazz-like harmonies, rhythms and melodies. |
