Description
During the 2005-6 academic year, Dr. Sarah Waters, Percussion Professor at Ohio Northern University invited Gary Powell Nash to be a visiting guest composer for their annual new music festival, which included lectures, master classes, a recital of Nash’s compositions and a commission to compose two steel drum band compositions. Nash chose to compose a slow-tempo work and a fast-tempo work, in which he titled them after they were completed.

The title Woosah came from a student in Nash’s jazz ensemble at Fisk University. Since the student is from Bahamas, Nash initially thought the word was Bahamian but instead learned that it came from the motion picture Bad Boys 2, as one of the characters in the movie used the word “woosah” to get someone to relax and calm down. Using an E minor modality, Woosah begins with a slow and big introduction, in which the harmonic framework there serves as a foundation for the remainder of the composition. The intro then transitions into a quasi-reggae groove and remains there throughout the work.
