EIGHT GRAVITATIONAL MINIATURES (2020) bass clarinet and drum set began with Movement 6, BOUNCE, composed in 2014. BOUNCE was originally conceived for a Vox Novus Composers Voice 15 Minutes of Fame call for scores for a one minute bass clarinet and drum set duo composition. Gary Powell Nash’s BOUNCE alludes to the lively, bluesy and dance-like nature of the piece. The principal motive, as well as the composition as a whole, is based on and inspired by West African folk music. In an attempt to make BOUNCE more marketable, Nash decided to compose 7 additional miniatures around it. The 7 complementary miniatures are all approximately 1 to 2 minutes in length, alternating fast tempo and slow tempo movements and all have titles related to gravity. Movement 1, “The Ascent” is a medium-fast tempo movement in septuple meter (alternating measures of 4/4 and 3/4 time signatures). Movement 2,”Sunken Place” is a slow movement, focusing on the lowest register of the bass clarinet. This transitions to Movement 3, “Crab Barrel Mentality”, a bass clarinet solo movement also at a slow tempo. Movement 4, “Centripetal Movement” is fast, marked “Spirito” and in triple meter with a compound time feel. Movement 5 is “Going Deep”, a slow tempo movement. Following “Bounce”, Movement 6 is “Ricochet”, Movement 7, a drum set solo. Movement 8, “Centrifugal Force” is medium-fast tempo, also in septuple meter (alternating measures of 4/4 and 3/4 time signatures) with highly syncopated jazz and pop-like melodies and rhythms. |
