| Description |
On the Battlefield, With Certainty draws its title from the lyrics of the spirituals “Lord, I’m Out Here on Your Word” and “Certainly, Lord”, both in the repertoire of the Fisk Jubilee Singers. Inspired by and drawing upon this and other spirituals, gospel tunes, and the composer’s own vast catalogue of music, On the Battlefield, With Certainty is sure to stir emotion even from those unfamiliar with the genre.
Densely orchestrated, an empowered and joyful mood animates the piece. The introductory section is leisurely and flowing, with many interchanging lines weaving into a chorale-like texture. Just as the chorale reaches an emotional climax, the tempo swiftly doubles in speed, where it remains for the rest of the piece. This upbeat section features complex and technically challenging runs, particularly in the upper woodwinds. Recurring ascending runs end in the arrival on and suspension of the highest note, sending a message of triumph and joy. Throughout the approximately eight-minute piece, listeners are carried on a journey of emotional transcendence. |
