Beschreibung |
In late Spring, 2011, a former classmate, who’s an oboist/English hornist and a staunch advocate of my music, had commissioned me to compose a double reed trio for 2 oboes and English horn to be premiered at a double reed festival in Portland, OR. The commissioner had asked for a short and exciting single movement work based on either jazz, blues, ragtime or other American musical genre that would prompt audience members/festival participants to move with the music while listening to it. The result was Soulful Trio, No. 1 (2011) 2 oboes and English horn, derived from a gospel blues-like progression.
The same commissioner later asked me about a Soulful Trio, No. 2 and my initial response was “if you’re really interested in one, then I’ll gladly compose it; however, with a different instrumentation if possible.” Soulful Trio, No. 2 (2012), conceived for oboe, English horn and bassoon is based on boogaloo music. Like it’s predecessor, Soulful Trio, No. 2 is short and fast tempo single movement work with many syncopated rhythms, also prompting listeners to move to the music. |
